Fishing Reel Care

Posted by

You can prolong the life of your gear and maintain performance with 1 simple step.  Rinse your gear with fresh water after use.  This is especially important if you are a saltwater fisherman.

Follow this simple plan after each fishing trip.  I can't tell you how many reels are brought into the shop for service that could have been avoided.

1. Set the drag on the reel tight.

2. Spray the rod and reel down with fresh water

3. Wipe with soapy water (optional)

4. Rinse off with fresh water

5. Shake off excess water

6. Set aside to air dry

7. After dry loosen the drag.  All reels should have the drag set loose when storing, especially for long term storage.

Penn makes a Rod & Reel Cleaner. This can be applied after everything is dry.  Simply spray on your rod and reel and wipe down. This makes a protective coating that will repel water and salt.  It makes cleanup much easier.  For under $5, this product is a good investment.

If you are going to attempt to oil your reel, know your limitations.  Check the schematic first and determine if you are up to the challenge.  Use oil and grease that is made for reel use.  Penn synthetic is great.  Here are the reel maintenance products. Usually, anything made for a car is not.  Final note... Do not use WD40.  As per our reel mechanic, "it strips the oil and grease from the gears"
